Conservation & Installation
Supporting artists and institutions with planning, compliance, and execution across Alaska.
An interesting facet of Bema that many are unaware of is our involvement in art installation and conservation efforts. The reality is that very few contractors are equipped to work within the complex needs of art installations, let alone collaborate directly with the artists themselves. A core part of Bema's identity is our work in unusual and highly specialized trades, which makes us an ideal candidate for collaboration and problem-solving in the handling, installation, and preservation of multiple mediums and complex sculptures.
BEMA also advocates for and actively supports artists throughout the process. Working on a 1% proposal can be a daunting task, and often, the artist is focused primarily on the creative aspect. This can result in the installation side being underdeveloped in the proposal package. Artist proposals are not only reviewed by the approval board but also by engineers and municipal, state, or federal oversight. Many eyes are evaluating the thoroughness, accuracy, and specific requirements of an installation.
Our team is here to collaborate, plan, and provide detailed line-item estimates for all aspects of the project, extending beyond creation. We assist the artist in developing a comprehensive proposal—one that can withstand rigorous review and evaluation. This role in the process is vital.
Bema is here to work with you on your project:
- Development of a plan and cost estimate for the installation phase of your project, for use in the proposal process
- Museum-grade handling and crating for shipping or storage
- Deinstallation of existing artwork for site work, storage, and eventual reinstallation
- Coordination with municipal permitting and code compliance, including right-of-way work on streets and sidewalks
- Safety services including fall protection, scaffolding, man lifts, boom lifts, etc.
- Heavy equipment for use in large-scale installation work
- Involvement and connections with seasoned 1% artists, sculptors, and administrators within the 1% programs for consultation and guidance
Bema works with the Municipality of Anchorage, the University of Alaska, the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the Anchorage Museum, Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport, multiple schools, and various state and federal sites across Alaska for art installation, preservation, and conservation. If you live in Anchorage, you likely drive past one of our projects every day. If you would like to know more, feel free to contact our administration team.
